CloseMark 2:13–17 | Mark 2:13–17 is one of the most important and memorable texts in Mark’s Gospel. In this text, we hear Jesus call Levi, the tax collector, to be one of his disciples; and then we see Jesus eating a meal in Levi’s house, surrounded by tax collectors and sinners. This is the kind of text that stirs our hearts to love Jesus more as we ponder his great mercy toward us who were great sinners. Yet, this is also the kind of text that confronts us about how we think about, look at, and relate to sinners. As Jesus says, “Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick.” Thankfully, Jesus did not come to call the righteous but sinners.
