CloseMark 1:14–20 | In Mark 1:1–13, Mark introduces his readers immediately to the ministry of John the Baptist, a man sent by God in fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy to prepare the way for the Lord. By Mark 1:14, however, John has moved off the scene; and Jesus, the One mightier than John, has emerged. But what exactly did this man Jesus preach? The summary of Jesus’s preaching is in Mark 1:14–15. In this sermon, we consider what Jesus means when he claims that the time of fulfillment is here and that the kingdom is near. In addition, we watch Jesus as He begins to move around Galilee and call a small band of brothers to leave everything else behind and follow Him.
