The Beginning of the Gospel
Mark 1:1–13 | “The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.” With this short and direct phrase, similar to a title, Mark opens his Gospel account. Mark’s Gospel is a book of good news: good news about Jesus, the Christ, the Son of God. But what does Mark look at as “the beginning” of that good news? Mark points immediately to the ministry and preaching of John the Baptist, the one God had promised to send centuries before to prepare the way for the Lord. By the end of our text, the One mightier than John appears and begins his mission of identifying with and rescuing his people.
