The Authority to Forgive Sin

The Gospel of Mark

Mark 2:1–12 | In Mark 2:1–12, Jesus returns to the house in Capernaum where he typically stayed. The crowds are so large and are pressing in on Jesus so much that there is no room left, not even at the door. After setting the scene, Mark then tells the story of how four men had a mutual friend, a paralyzed man, and how they tried to get their friend to Jesus. When they finally succeed, after some unconventional efforts, Jesus deals first not with the man’s sickness but, rather surprisingly, with the paralyzed man’s sins. This story begins to shed new light on who Jesus is claiming to be and on what authority Jesus claims to have.
